The Florence Golf Club is a synonym of history fascination and champions
The Florence Golf Club welcomes you with all its charm as soon as you pass through the gate, more precisly, even before your arrival! The golf-course is situated on the beautiful Chianti hills and crossed by the road that connects Florence and Siena. In fact while travelling on the ‘Chiantigiana’ road, just a few kilometers out you will be surprised by a glimpse of the holes on you right and left side with the cypress trees that border them!
You are surronded by the great history of the sport, from the club house that is protected by the Fine Arts, to the worn out parquet inside the building, it is a warm memory from the days when you still played with metal spikes and the photos of the champions that have played here almost nonchalantly. The ‘Ugolino’ was founded in 1933 but the sport association from which it comes from was founded in 1889, thanks to the Florentine English colony.
A great overview from the second green at Florence Golf Club
The golf course is perfectly integrated with the surrounding panoramas almost as if the architects simply placed it on the Chianti hills. It’s not particularly long if you compare it with todays' standards but it is very technical. The greens are as small as postage stamps and the fairways always slanted downhill and will do everything to give you hardships… you won’t play a shot that goes where you want it to go.
Precision is the keyword on the first nine: the first three holes are short par fours where you “would” (the use of conditional is obligatory) be able to save some strokes for the rest of the game. In fact on the 4th tee we usually say “now we start to play seriously”. There is one par 3 of 200 meters waiting for you, and after that comes the most difficult hole on the course. A par 4 of 400 meters with a blind approach to the green! Tip:pay particular attention on the second shot of the 6th hole and on the tee shot on the 9th.
In the beginning of hole number 10 (a par 3 that is 190 meters long) you will face a beautiful panorama with the lake under you and in the background the hills of Fiesole. Often you will find some “guests” close to the green, pay attention, these geese are very touchy! Try to pass the difficult hole number 11 and then you move on the 12th hole you enter into a tunnel. As we said in the beginning, five holes are on the other side of the ‘Chiantigiana’ road and you will pass under it to reach hole number 13. Close to the green of this hole you will find a small statue of the Virgin Mary, if you have a good score a small thank you is required!
The final holes will let you catch your breath, at least until hole number 18 with its sharp dog-leg to the right hand side where landing your tee shot on the raised blind green is fundamental…. Now when you are done playing, relax with a nice cocktail in the shade on the terrace, or if it’s winter time in front of the open fire. Can you ask for more after a splendid day at the Florence Golf Club ? You sure can, in the restaurant of the golf club you can try the traditional Florentine cuisine. Everything tastes great but we would recommend the ‘pappa al pomodoro’ (typical Tuscan bread and tomato stew) or the ‘grigliata mista’ (mixed grill).
